OMS Commercial Director elected to the Board of Subsea UK   -   09-11-2011
Denise Smiles, Commercial Director at pipe measurement specialist Optical Metrology Services (OMS) Ltd, has been elected to the Board of Subsea UK, the industry body and focal point for the entire British subsea industry.
At its Annual General Meeting on 3rd November 2011, held at the Gordon Highlander’s Museum in Aberdeen, Denise was one of 10 new board members elected by member companies to represent Subsea UK and the subsea industry going forward.
Subsea UK is the industry body for the UK subsea industry and aims to increase business opportunities at home and abroad for the sector. The company acts for the whole supply chain, bringing together operators, contractors, suppliers and people in the industry.
Subsea UK was established by the industry and acts on behalf of the industry. Denise has more than 15 years’ commercial experience working for a wide range of blue chip organisations. As Commercial Director at OMS since 2006, Denise is responsible for Strategy, Projects, Contracts, QHSE and HR. She developed OMS’ business strategy and short term, mid-term and long term business plan to enable the company to grow in accordance with the business plan objectives. To date, OMS has achieved 100% growth each year from 2006 to 2010. She also established and managed the development of the sales division of the company – including setting up a US office. A commercial contracts lawyer by training, Denise obtained an MA in Business Management & Strategy in 2002.
Denise has also been actively involved in the execution of a large number of deep water projects, which required improvement of dimensional tolerances, fit-up solutions in the firing line and delivery of specific pipeline architectures to ensure best fit-up with difficult pipes including (Shell) BC10, (BP) Galapagos, (BP) Block 18 and 31, (Petrobras) P56 and P55, (Chevron) Gorgon.
On being elected to the Board of Subsea UK, Denise commented: “I am absolutely delighted to be elected as a member of the Board of Subsea UK. OMS itself is an SME and so I want to try to represent the interests and give more of a voice to the smaller companies in our sector and to help these companies succeed in what is now a fiercely competitive, global subsea market.”
