Straightness Tool

Client Requirements
Pipes are never absolutely straight. During the manufacture, delivery, welding or straightening of pipes after spooling, bends or kinks can occur in the pipe.

In pipeline construction (spool base, welding, drilling risers and drilling), tolerances are critical. Therefore, accurate measurement is required to determine if manufactured pipes meet the desired specification. To prevent buckling, drilling riser support pipes need to be measured for their straightness, as do double-jointed pipes. Measuring can take place on land, after bending trials or onboard pipe-laying vessels during spooling operations, where straightness of pipes needs to be verified.

Solution

The OMS Pipe CheckerTM Straightness Tool enables the operator to quickly and accurately determine the straightness of a pipe.

The tool uses a laser beam as a straight line in space. By ensuring that this line is the same distance away from the pipe at two different locations (both ends of the pipe), the straightness can be measured at any other point between these locations, to 1mm accuracy if required.

Straightness measurements can now be carried out in situ resulting in faster, easier and more accurate measurements, with reduced waste material on board the pipe-laying vessel.
