Ichthys IIa – successful completion of onshore measurement, fit-up and inspection

The Ichthys gas field was discovered in 2000 by INPEX and is one of the most significant oil and gas projects in the world. Located off the coast of Western Australia, the field is expected to produce 8.9 million tonnes of LNG and 1.65 million tonnes of LNP per annum, alongside 100,000 barrels of concentrate per day at peak*. During phase one of the project, OMS provided pipe measurement and fit-up services using our SmartFit™ technology that enabled the operator to achieve optimum pipe fit-up, despite challenging circumstances.

Full range of OMS capabilities

For the second stage of the project, Ichthys II, OMS was contracted by McDermott (on behalf of owner/operator INPEX) to provide our full suite of services – pipe end measurement, bevel inspection, SmartFit™ and weld inspection both onshore and offshore. Work for the onshore stage was completed at McDermott’s onshore facility in Batam, Indonesia.

Double-jointing fabrication scope

The onshore part of the project involved a group of companies working together to coat, measure, fit-up, weld and inspect a large quantity of double-jointed pipe intended for offshore installation. OMS worked alongside project leaders McDermott, coating specialists Shawcor, WASCO and PIH, pipe manufacturer Butting and offshore engineering experts Remacut to ensure the project was delivered on time and to specification.

OMS attended the Butting pipe fabrication facility in Germany, where we measured 75km of high-quality BuBi® pipe, recording comprehensive data on pipe size and shape. Following transportation to Batam in preparation for pipe external coating, the bevels were measured using the OMS Bevel360 tool before being fitted together with OMS SmartFit™, a process that helps clients reduce HiLo and achieve optimum fit-up even with poor quality or out-of-specification pipe. Once welded, the double-jointed pipes were inspected with our award-winning technology to ensure they were suitable for laying offshore.

Marcus Smiles, OMS Global Account Manager, said, “OMS measurement, SmartFit™ and inspection services helped to ensure that the double-jointed pipes were prepared with the best possible ends for fit-up offshore, reducing the chance of cut-outs during the time-critical pipe-lay stage.”

‘Exceptional quality and unprecedented production rates’

Mathieu Lancien, Principal Materials Engineer, said, “Congratulations to the McDermott, Butting, OMS, PIH, Remacut, WASCO, and ShawCor teams on completing safely the INPEX Phase 2a double jointing scope in PTMI Batam, Indonesia. More than 2000 joints welded, inspected and coated with exceptional quality and unprecedented production rates for CRA pipelines. Tremendous teamwork and performance under challenging pandemic circumstances, looking forward to a successful offshore campaign later this year!”
