Pipe end measurement and fit-up

Our pipe measurement and fit-up services help clients achieve optimum fit-up, leading to stronger, safer, longer lasting pipelines and more efficient installation. Although pipes look round they are not.

  • Achieve optimum fit up

  • Reduce downtime and repairs

  • Reduce HiLo

  • Increase pipeline lifetime

  • Group, sort and sequence pipe

  • Select ‘golden’ pipe for critical sections

OMS has measured millions of pipe ends since 2003 and in all our years of experience we have never found one that is perfectly round. When pipes are joined together any mismatch between the two ends causes welding difficulties and stress concentration areas that can result in pipeline fatigue and even failure. Measuring the pipe ends provides data which is used to rotate them to an optimum point where they fit together best before welding. The system can even be used with pipes that have areas of unusual shape or are in poor condition.

 AutoTool

Rapid laser scan measures pipe end in less than 12 seconds, providing a full range of data for better quality pipe fit-up. Over 200 pipe ends can be measured in one shift. Used successfully in major global energy projects.

  • 2,048 measurements

  • Accurate to 0.05mm

  • Easily transported in airline hand-luggage

  • ID, OD, WT and OoR measurements

  • Easy to use

SmartFit™

SmartFit™ helps clients achieve the best possible fit-up, even in complex critical pipeline sections. Provides the most comprehensive fit-up information on the market. SmartFit™ works in harmony with our measurement tools, reporting data to Excel. Pipes can be sorted, grouped and sequenced for optimum fit-up and ‘golden’ pipe can be selected for critical sections.

  • Reduce fit-up time and increase productivity

  • Bring projects in on budget

  • Increase asset lifetime

  • Improve weld quality

  • Mitigate project risks

  • Achieve project standards

 Bevel360 - laser bevel measurement

Eliminate doubt about bevel compliance and gain unrivalled insight into critical pipe bevel geometry with the Bevel360, which uses state-of-the-art lasers to provide comprehensive information about a pipe bevel. The Bevel360 Mk II has recently been released - this ground-breaking new technology will allow improved understanding of the pipe bevel shape, streamlining welding processes and increasing installation efficiency.

  • Total 360 degree coverage of the bevel

  • Go/ no-go in 25 seconds

  • Allows production control of bevel quality

  • Pipe sizes from 6” to 32”

  • Wall thickness up to 45 mm

  • Measures most common bevel types

Spool and pipe-lay ovality checker

Verify pipe ovality during the reeling process to ensure pipeline integrity and prolong asset lifetime. When pipe is reeled for offshore laying its ovality can increase during the process. The tensioners that reel and unreel the pipe can affect the shape, leading to areas of stress and potential integrity problems in years to come. Developed following a customer request, the OMS ovality checking system uses a removable ring with mounted laser sensors to monitor pipe ovality in real time.

  • Prevent problems caused by excessive pipe ovality

  • Monitor critical factors that can shorten asset life expectancy

  • Verify ovality conforms to design specifications

  • Dynamic measurement of ovality during offshore pipelay

  • Real-time simultaneous measurements from multiple lasers

  • Suitable for multiple types of pipe and cable

  • Flexible systems can be modified for most deployments

  • Suitable for integration with existing systems

  • Accurate and repeatable

  • Traceable measurements and results
